This spring marks the launch of the Los Angeles chapter of UN Women, an independent, non-profit, 501(c)3 organization. UN Women is a global champion for women and girls led by United Nations Undersecretary Michele Bachelet, former President of Chile. UN Women is the only entity at the United Nations solely devoted to addressing women and gender issues, coordinating with other UN departments and civil societies to accomplish its mission.
The UN Women-LA chapter can serve as an ideal partner and complement to AAUW-Beach Cities branch by increasing the number of women in the greater Los Angeles region who are dedicated to the mission of social, political, and economic equality for women and girls around the world. Additionally, through advocacy and resource and information sharing, both groups can collaboratively increase the social capital of women and girls locally. Panelists will discuss what the United Nations is doing via UN Women in the following four areas: -Increasing women's leadership and participation -Ending violence against women -Enhancing women's economic empowerment -Making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting.

This is a story of three school girls who grew up in pre-Castro Cuba, eventually coming to the United States at different times and under different circumstances. Here they are reunited with stories to tell. A unique feature of this book is the weaving of the same events through different eyes. President's Message - February

February turns our thoughts to Presidents of the United States of America. I truly love to check out Lincoln’s quotes; they are often so timeless, wise and sometimes he lets show his longing for humor as he lived through and fought through a most difficult time in our nation’s history.

“If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Five? No, calling a tail a leg, don’t make it a leg!”

Or a bit of wisdom for our dreams and aspirations – “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.”

Or the thoughts about human ingenuity – “Beavers build houses; but they build them nowise differently, or better now, than they did, five thousand years ago. Ants, and honey-bees, provide food for winter; but just the same way they did, when Solomon referred the sluggard to them as patterns of prudence. Man is not the only animal who labors; but he is the only one who improves his workmanship.”

These words of a humble man who tried his honest best to do the right thing reminds me of the reason I feel so strongly about the mission and work of AAUW and the wonderful friends and colleagues I have met and worked with throughout the years. There are always things we can do to “improve the workmanship” – the situation – the future of the next generation.

Beach Cities Branch’s efforts to improve the future concentrate on providing opportunities for the up-and-coming generations. Our fund-raising efforts for our El Camino Scholarship, the AAUW Funds, and camperships for seventh grade girls to go to science camp this coming summer make opportunities for changing lives. Thank all of you for your part in these efforts. (See you at the Comedy & Magic Club and the Authors’ Luncheon!)

A member of the staffs of Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Little Company of Mary Hospital, Dr. Goodlerner also serves as a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. She lectures to the medical staffs of local South Bay hospitals on the latest developments in cosmetic surgery, and her practice is a BOTOX® National Training Center for teaching the technique to RNs and other MDs.

Dr. Goodlerner completed her dermatology residency at UCLA, following two years of residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan Affiliate Hospitals in Ann Arbor. A graduate of Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.

President’s Message
I am not sure of the source of this piece, but it’s a worthwhile historical reference.

"Ruler of new beginnings, gates and doors, the first hour of the day, the first day of the month, and the first month of the year, the Roman god Janus gave January its name. He was pictured as two-headed (both heads bearded) and situated so that one head looked forward into the new year while the other took a retrospective view. Janus also presided over the temple of peace, where the doors were opened only during wartime. It was a place of safety, where new beginnings and new resolutions could be forged, just as the New Year is a time for new objectives and renewed commitments to long-term goals."

I love the last part of this “It is a place of safety, ...”. We as a philanthropic organization have much to look forward to with renewed commitments. We have two fund raisers we will be working on. The first one will be very easy and JUST FUN! Purchase a ticket (or 2 or more) at the Comedy Club in Hermosa Beach and join all of us on Wednesday, Feb. 8th for some good laughs. Our other major event is our Authors’ Luncheon, May 19, 2012, Immigrant Stories and Tales from Foreign Lands. The authors have been selected and according to reviews we are in for another memorable event. Reservations will begin in February. More information can be found inside this newsletter under our Book Group news. This event calls for much more of a membership commitment. There are still places to help in making this a memorable day. Won’t you be the one to step forward?

Tis’ the season... I know, I know, we are supposed to be joyful, but sometimes that emotion seems to be allusive. This got me thinking about how this idea of JOY can overcome the stresses that life puts on each and every one of us. Here come the quotes, all too good to leave any one of them out.

Then I recalled an LA Times feature from a couple of years ago about smiling and did an internet search on the topic. This turned up a few interesting studies of which I will share only the conclusions.

Branch Meeting - November: Madeline Sharples

Madeline Sharples, author of Leaving the Hall Light On In 1999, Madeline Sharples went through probably the worst event a person could experience, the death by his own hand of her handsome, talented son. In her harrowing but ultimately uplifting memoir, she tells how she, her husband and younger son weathered this nightmare. For Madeline, writing became part of the healing process.

In addition to Leaving the Hall Light On, Madeline co-authored Blue-Collar Women: Trailblazing Women Take on Men-Only Jobs (New Horizon Press, 1994) a book about women in nontraditional professions, and she co-edited the poetry anthologies, The Great American Poetry Show, Volumes 1 (Muse Media, 2004) and 2 (2010). Her poetry also accompanies the work of photographer Paul Blieden in two books, The Emerging Goddess and Intimacy.

AAUW has always meant opportunities. The door is open to work on a broad goal as suggested by the larger organization, or to work on one’s own project as long as it is within the AAUW mission. With this in mind here are my quotes for the month:

The opportunity that Beach Cities Branch has embraced has been Tech Trek. In order to provide a week-long campus experience for 7th grade girls we have our yearly Authors’ Luncheon. The project this year is continuing only because of a collective effort. We are still in need of helpers for select jobs: publicity design, publicity, book selling, room decorations. If you are willing to help with any of these jobs, please let me know. As of this moment we have an outstanding team of
collaborators. Please be part of this.

AAUW has developed $mart $tart, a seminar presented on campuses for students entering the workforce. The focus of this seminar is the importance of informed negotiation concerning salary and pay raises throughout careers. Women are still below the wage level of men in comparable jobs. Studies have shown that women tend to be less aggressive in negotiating for salary status, and therefore end up with less. AAUW members interested in providing this service to a university in their area are provided with training and material. This coming November there are 4 opportunities to participate in this training: USC San Marcos, Nov. 10, USC Channel Islands, Nov. 12, UC Irvine, Nov. 14,and UC Riverside, Nov.16. Registration is required, so if you are interested please contact me for more details.

Right here at home is the opportunity to contribute to the strength of our own branch. Our November First Friday will be a time for each one of us to reach out to friends and bring someone along to meet us in a relaxed social setting. Ginny Evans is opening her home for this event.

Let’s all make a real effort to bring in a new member.

Quote for the month: “Oh, if I could but live another century and see the fruition of all the work for women! There is so much yet to be done.” Susan B. Anthony in a 1902 interview. At the age of 82, Anthony was
still active but in poor health. She worked for women’s suffrage for 50 years; however, women would not gain the vote until 1920, fourteen years after her death.
In my message in the September newsletter I mention my belief in the mission of AAUW and deep appreciation of the women who have dedicated themselves to a society of equal opportunities for all, with
emphasis on women’s rights. This year October 10 marks the centennial of women winning the right to vote in California. The equal suffrage amendment was passed by male voters with a margin of just one vote
per voting precinct. This victory took effort and action. One hundred years later the need for social activism still exists.
AAUW has always promoted Public Policy based on our mission and careful, thorough study. With this in mind, California AAUW is asking us, as a branch, to become actively involved in undertaking the Study of
the California Initiative Process. This will involve doing an in-depth study on the initiative process, its history and social impact, concluding with recommendations for action. AAUW needs to educate both legislators and the public about the impact of this process. I would love to see our Branch become part of this study. Each participating Branch will submit a consensus report in the spring. The state will then compile a report synthesizing the individual studies to present to legislators and to release to the public. Is anyone interested in joining me in this effort? Book Group
Here is our fall schedule. We meet at booklovers' homes on the 4th Saturdays at 1:00pm to discuss Best Sellers - Past and Presetn in Sept., Oct., and Dec.(Holiday potluck). Meetings start with light refreshments followed by discussion of our selected book. The first four months of 2012 we will read selections by authors who will speak at the Author's Luncheon in May.

On September 24th we will beet at Judy Scataloni's, 705 31st Street, Manhattan Beach, to discuss The Postmistress, by Sarah Blake. The story alternates between an American woman radio reporter in London during the blitz and people in a small New England town who fear German invasion.

The County Library has many copies. Order son. Even if you have not read the book, join us. Everyone is welcome.

Film Discussion Group
The film discussion group took a break for the summer. However, we will resume meeting on Thursday 29th at 7pm at the home of June Wang, 4 Park Place, Manhattan Beach. Topic: Films you saw this summer that you would recommend. We will arrange our schedule for the year and choose a couple of films to discuss in October. All members are invited. I love finding a good quote for any occasion and I found a winner for September! What could be more fitting as we meet in celebration of our young scholars who participated in this summer’s Tech Trek?

I have stepped back into the role of Branch President because of my deep appreciation of all the women who have contributed to the mission of AAUW, participating with the “peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

As mentioned in the August “news-ette” we moved the venue to accommodate a larger group. All of the campers can now bring their families, large or small, to participate in this celebration of what may well establish some educational goals for these girls.

There is one more quote I would like to share with you that again seemed to say much about why we as a group are willing to put in the collective effort to send these girls to camp:

A Note from Your President!

Summer flies by when you are having fun. My goal in life is to limit my moments attending to the news, maximize my time interacting with 2 and 4 year olds, and try to find something to laugh about each day.

AAUW Beach Cities is gearing up for another wonderful year. The Board and interested members gathered this July for a planning session and I am filled with a new enthusiasm for our group and our greater mission. A few changes were decided on and some traditions were continued. The major changes will be in the attempt to make the 3rd Saturday of each month as our meeting day.

(Attempt because it was not always possible.) Another change is in our September and Octobermeeting place. We will be holding these two meetings at the Manhattan Beach Community
Church Assembly Hall, located on 303 South Peck Ave., Manhattan Beach 90266.

Our September meeting has meeting has traditionally been a time to meet with our Tech Trek Campers and their families. Because of the limited size of space at The Lakes, we have had to limit the girls to bringing only one family member. We would like to be able to offer a larger space so the girls feel free to invite any family members, while having plenty of room for our own members to share in their experiences.

Our October meeting will be held at the church also because The Lakes is unavailable to us when we would like to meet. After that we will return to The Lakes of El Segundo to our most
comfortable, lovely meeting room.

Our fund-raising venture will again be our Authors' Luncheon on May 19th, 2012. Thanks to anoutpouring of help to continue the project we are on our way to sponsor one more successful fundraiser for Tech Trek, EF and LAF (The Funds).

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our Saturday, Aug. 27th, End of Summer Fling.

Keeping Your Brain Healthy: Program Meeting, April 16th

Elizabeth Amini is the CEO of Anti-Aging Games, LLC which features games designed to stimulate the brain and teach tips to reduce risk of early memory loss. The games are built by Nolan Bushnell, Founder of Atari, and a panel of neurobehavioral scientists.

In addition, Elizabeth worked as a scientist at JPL/NASA for five years. She is a dynamic speaker, a regular guest speaker at USC's Marshall Business School, and excels at making complicated topics easy to understand.

Dear AAUW MB Branch Members and Friends,

The Author's Luncheon, “Challenges and Triumphs of and by Women” is fast approaching! BeckyTan, our Treasurer, informs me that she has not heard from many of you. Please take the time now to contact your friends, colleagues, and neighbors and invite them to this lovely event at the Torrance Doubletree Hotel on May 14. If each of our membership sold just three!tickets we would easily make our goal, allowing our branch to send six worthy grade seven girls to Tech Trek Camp at the University of California, San Diego!and support other AAUW projects. In addition, we are in need of silent auction items and program advertisements. The attachments are for you to take to your merchant or business connection. Bee Campbell is going to organize the program layout and can be contacted for further information. I want to thank all of you in advance for your needed participation.

Holly Mosher, AAUW member, did an outstanding job at our March meeting sharing her interesting experiences while filming Bonsai: Celebrating the Vision of Mohammad Yunus. Holly still needs funds to finish this feature length documentary film about Yunus, the founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Prize winner. The audience also viewed some movie clips from her work using the new TV monitor hookup in The Lakes banquet room. Thank you to Adrienne Zeigler who acted as facilitator for the program. The time of year is approaching when we nominate members for the Board for the 2011-2012 year. Board positions may be shared, including the president’s position, so please don't be shy. Our AAUW Beach Cities Branch, formerly Manhattan Beach Branch, has been active throughout the South Bay since 1953 and needs you in order to continue the mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Branch Meeting - Documentary Film Maker - Holly Mosher

Join us to hear Holly talk about her movie Bonsai and her overall experience with film making.

Holly Mosher is an award winning filmmaker who brings socially conscious films to the public. After graduating with honors from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Holly produced a number of commercials and feature films. In 2004 she made her directorial debut with the documentary, Hummingbird.
Afterwards, she produced the critically acclaimed films Side Effects, starring Katherine Heigl, and the follow-up documentary Money Talks: Profits Before Patient Safety.

She has served as a producer and executive producer on several films including: Maybe Baby, Vanishing of the Bees and FREE FOR ALL!! Currently, Holly is in production on her second directorial project, Bonsai, where she is following the work of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank.

Her films have received international press attention, and The Hollywood Reporter named her one of the top up-and-coming independent film producers.

Dear Members,

It's hard to believe that we are fast approaching our author's luncheon, "Challenges and Triumphs Of and By
Women" scheduled for Saturday, May 14. March is typically the time!when we begin to sell tickets to friends and family. Please copy the attached flyer, add a personal message and invite your family, friends and colleagues. I find that people really appreciate and enjoy being included in this special event.

Our February 12 breakfast meeting about Human Trafficking was very successful with close to 50 persons in attendance. Kimberly Agbonkpolor, program manager of The L. A. Metro Task Force On Human Trafficking and her team of law enforcement experts facilitated by Emily Williams addressed the complex problem of human trafficking right here in Los Angeles. AAUWMB was pleased to present a donation of $50.00 to "CAST," a Coalition To Abolish Slavery and Trafficking. In addition, members made individual donations to this worthy cause. Members interested in supporting CAST projects are invited to their annual fundraiser at the Skirball Cultural Center on!Thursday, May 12 with sponsors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.

The speaker for our March 19 meeting is, Holly Mosher, documentary movie director and producer. LA Metro Task Force on Human Trafficking - General Meeting 2/12/11

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Victims of this heinous crime can be found right here in our own backyard. The mission of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Task Force on Human Trafficking (LAMTF-HT) is to identify and rescue trafficking victims, provide assistance, and prosecute those responsible.

The LAMTF-HT was launched in January 2005 under the leadership of the LAPD, Robbery-Homocide Division. The LAMTF-HT is a multi-agency consortium created to address the complex problem of human trafficking in the greater LA metropolitan area, which includes both the City and County of Los Angeles.

The LAMTF is a coalition of 25 federal and local law enforcement and prosecution agencies and social service providers that work together to identify and aid trafficking victims. Kimberly will speak about the task force’s accomplishments and will provide tips for identifying victims of human trafficking. The discussion will be facilitated by Emily Williams.

Have you checked out any of the activities happening recently in the Branch? Lots of buzz out there about Mah Jongg and the need to add a second table of players. The film and book groups are also enjoying their time together (see upcoming dates). The "Girls in Gear" event with the Torrance and PVP AAUW branches was an outstanding career forum and so well attended. Many thanks to the panel of experts who presented information and the Torrance branch for their organization of this successful annual event.

Dr. Howard Murad shared his new book entitled, "The Water Secret" which explains his theory on aging, the role of cellular water and steps people can take to improve their cellular health at our January meeting. All members and guests received gift bags and were offered the opportunity to purchase a copy of Dr. Murad's book at a deeply discounted cost. This popular meeting was well attended by 39 members and guests. Two new members were recruited as well. Thank you to Vickie McCorkendale for her role as facilitator.

Let's resolve in the new year to continue to provide stimulating speakers for our branch meeting and offer support in whatever way we can. Let's further resolve to reach out to other women by inviting them to a meeting. Please make your reservations for branch meetings as early as possible in order that The Lakes
staff can be prepared. Becky Tan at rjtan@verizon.net will take reservations for our general meeting for the balance of the year.

Our branch name change from AAUW Manhattan Beach to AAUW Beach Cities has been approved by the AAUW State office and has been forwarded to the AAUW National offices for their final seal of approval. Certainly our branch needs to plan something special when the process is finally completed. Please contact me with any suggestions for programs or fundraising events. Dear AAUW MB Branch Members,

AAUW members enjoyed a truly enthusiastic meeting on Saturday at the Lakes Golf Course. We had over 45 persons in attendance pushing the banquet room to its limits but all seemed to work out beautifully with the help of the "Lakes" staff and our own branch members. All six of our Tech Trek girls shared highlights of their University of San Diego camp experiences using power point technology or large posters. Huge thanks to Laurie Walters who not only assisted the girls with the technology set up, but a few years ago donated the very expensive power point projector to the branch. This meeting is her favorite because she can hear and see first hand the rewards of her AAUW volunteerism reflected in the faces of the girls and their families.

Thanks are also in order for the Tech Trek team including Terry, Ginny, and Margaret who made the many contacts with the girls and saw to it that all the details needed were complete for camp. We were so pleased to have Terry with us on Saturday and introduce the girls.

Thanks also to my board including Ann with greetings, Bee with collecting the money, Nita with publicity, Sue with communication and Barbara who worked with the reservations for the first time. A pat on the back to all of you that in some way supported this project throughout the year. Thank you.

Our membership currently stands at 52 and about the same as last year. While some members attend meetings regularly some do not, however you do support us with your membership. This expression of support is critical to the branch and greatly appreciated and needed. Never hesitate to contact me with suggestions or questions. It's not too early to mark your calendar for our Author's luncheon on May 14 at the Doubletree Hotel in Torrance.

Please note the new opportunities for interest groups in your newsletter. If you have a friend that wants to attend and isn't an AAUW member by all means extend the invitation with the understanding that she would need to join after the second time. Interest groups are a good way to build membership.

I look forward to seeing you at the October 16 meeting presented by the League of Women Voters. The timing is perfect to review the many propositions on the November 2 ballot.

The students will be making presentations about their unique summer experiences living in a UC campus dorm and attending exhilarating science and math classes and field trips, like Sea Camp.

Summer went by too quickly and I’m sure that you would agree that our weather was far from typical for the southland. There were eleven of us at the summer planning meeting on August 14 including Bee Campbell, Margaret Thelen, Becky Tan, Ann Paour, LauraLee Wiseman, Arlene Morris, Barbara Rabinowitz, Sue Brennan , Terry Hays-Horner and Jean Schaefer.

Thank you for your participation in this very important leadership role. The calendar for the New Year has now been established with an interesting program of speakers and activities. Our kick -off meeting at the Lakes will feature all of the girls who attended Tech Trek camp in San Diego. This program is always a popular one for our members because we are able to hear from the girls themselves and learn about their experiences at camp. Come out and support your branch and bring along a prospective member.

In the planning stages for next year are programs about human trafficking, anti-aging strategies, challenges and triumphs by women around the globe (film documentary), Dr. Howard Murad (Murad Institute), and the League of Women Voters. Our branch members will also want to consider attending the California AAUW State Conference in Irvine this year on April 8-11. Mark your calendar now for our annual author’s luncheon on May 14 at the Torrance Doubletree Hotel. Be sure to check out the sign-up forms for new interest groups at the September meeting.

Also in the planning/discussion stage is the investigation of a procedure/checklist for Title IX compliance in the school place. The planning committee members felt that it was important that we explore some kind of follow-up tool that our branch would use for positive change for girls in sports.

President's Message - July 2010

Dear AAUW MB Branch Members,

We did it! Our membership at the June 12 meeting voted unanimously to change our branch name to AAUW Beach Cities. We will now submit the proposed name change to the AAUW state board which informs all branches in the state and forwards the change when approved by the state board to the AAUW Governance Committee chair. The AAUW Governance Committee chair has the authority to approve a branch name change. If the name is unacceptable, the branch is notified. Becky Tan explained that our branch has considered a name change for a long time in order to be more inclusive. This process could take up to a year.

Thank you to Arlene Morris, Barbara Rabinowitz and Andrea Goldstein who presided over the lovely installation of the new board for next year. Thanks and words of appreciation were also given for outgoing board members and chairpersons who have worked so hard this year to keep our AAUW branch organization on track. While Emily Williams will no longer be our programs VP, she has graciously offered to provide three programs for us next year.

Please contact me if you can assist with any of the various duties associated with the author’s luncheon next year. Most important during the months of June through November will be the preliminary tasks needed to research and acquire author panelists. Elaine Bohrer has prepared a comprehensive, “How to” guide for us.

Want to start an AAUW sponsored interest group? Maybe you have an interest or passion that has been calling you to study and learn and make new friends with common interests at a time and place that is convenient for you. Participants will need to become AAUW members and board approval is required.

The summer planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 14 at 10 AM at my home (NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION). Lunch will be served. RSVP is appreciated. All are welcome to attend this important working meeting. Bring suggestions for speakers and topics that support our mission and ideas for fundraising. You may wish to research names and make preliminary contacts if possible.

Romayne Thompson and I had the opportunity to attend the Lawndale School District Board meeting and award Tech Trek scholarships to Brittney Castillo and Denise Curtis. We were so cordially greeted by board members, superintendent, middle school principals and parents. It was extremely gratifying to see and observe what an impact we make in the lives of young women.

Branch Name Change

For several years members of the branch have discussed changing the name of this branch to represent the broad geographical status of our membership. Out of the approximate 60 members, about half live in Manhattan Beach. Many of the rest live in adjacent or nearby locations, within a short distance of the coast.

BRANCH NAME CHANGE

Therefore, it has been proposed that the branch revise its name to AAUW BEACH CITIES. This proposal will be discussed and voted upon on the June 12th meeting. If approved, it will have to be transmitted to State and National bodies for approval.

Please plan to attend in order to have input into this decision.

Post Author's Luncheon Notes

The Manhattan Beach branch can pat itself on the back for another successful authors’ luncheon. Our emcee and panel of authors were terrific! Our branch made a profit of over $5500 which is enough for six Tech Trek scholarships as well as a nice donation to EF/LAF (AAUW Funds). In addition, generous donations from Pamela Mitchell, Adrienne Zeigler and Rose Lee Holman will give us enough to send a seventh girl to Tech Trek in 2011.

We would like to thank everyone who made the luncheon a resounding success. In particular, we would like to thank:

Branch President's Message - May 2010

AAUW’s magazine, “OUTLOOK,” devoted its entire winter edition to answering the question –Why so few women in science and math careers? Why so few women in Congress? Why so few women CEO’s in Fortune 500 companies? The report is being cited by major national media. The AAUW report (just released) examines and analyzes a wide range of research and offers effective strategies for bringing more women and girls into these fields. Be sure that you read these powerful articles that will make you feel proud to be a member of an organization that does so much to create a world in which our daughters and granddaughters will feel free to pursue careers in any field they choose. Our April general meeting was well attended by close to 40 persons with members of our sister Torrance branch joining us. The feedback from members attending was very positive. Legal Advocacy Attorney Elizabeth Kristen told about some of her work ensuring compliance with the provisions of the "Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972" which states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."

Ms. Kristen explained the importance of Title IX compliance. "The benefits of participating in school sports go far beyond physical fitness. High school girls who participate in team sports are less likely to drop out of school, smoke, drink, or become pregnant, and are more likely to go to college. The skills gained from sports participation, including teamwork, leadership, and discipline, are crucial as women progress in the corporate world at higher levels than ever before. Eighty percent of female managers of Fortune 500 companies have played organized sports on some level." She was accompanied by Susan Noble and her two high school daughters. Both girls shared their experiences with the sports program at their high school and explained how legal intervention makes a difference for positive change.

Plans for the June 12 general meeting include installation and recognition of our board members and a discussion and vote regarding a name change for the branch from AAUWMB to AAUW Beach Cities. The branch has been considering this for many years. The process for name change may take up to a year for approval from the state and national AAUW organization. We want to hear your thoughts and ideas for future events, projects, and new interest groups that would be of interest to you, so join us on June 12 at the Lakes.

The American Association of University Women is a not-for-profit national advocacy organization that seeks to advance equity for all women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Membership in the Manhattan Beach branch is open to any Southland resident with a college degree (AA or above) who supports these ideals.

PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT WILL BENEFIT:

TECH TREK: AAUW has found that during the middle-school years, girls frequently turn away from the sciences in response to societal, familial, or peer influences. To counter this trend, our branch awards scholarships to seventh-grade girls so they may attend week-long summer science camps, called Tech Trek, organized by the California AAUW. Campers stay in dorms at one of five California college campuses, where, with adult chaperones, they take part in a wide variety of exciting science-related projects and also have the opportunity to meet dynamic women who have been successful in scientific fields. This week of personal growth and unique science discovery is of great value in shaping the futures of these girls and in exposing them to the possibilities associated with science, math, and technology.

AAUW FUNDS: One of the world's largest sources of funding for graduate women, the AAUW Educational Foundation provided $4.5 million in funding for more than 250 fellowships, grants, and special awards to outstanding women in the 2008-09 academic year. AAUW has also been at the forefront of research on issues of women and education for decades. Within the AAUW FUNDS is the Legal Advocacy Fund which works to combat sex discrimination through community and campus outreach programs, a resource library and online advocacy tools, and various research reports. LAF seeks amicus curiae opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace. LAF is also transitioning toward supporting landmark sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women.

Spring is here and that is a sign that our annual ”A Touch of Humor” author’s luncheon is fast approaching. May 15 will be here before you know it so please call your friends and sell tickets to this popular event. Last week, our branch members finished the student interview process and once again we only wish that we could send more girls to Tech Trek camp. The girls are truly all champions! The author’s luncheon is our major fundraiser event for Tech Trek camp and for our educational programs. The cost for one week of camp for one girl is $750.00 for the branch and $50.00 paid for by the parent.

Welcome to new branch members Cyndi Hathaway and Sharon Cascadden. Leanna Levine has also rejoined the branch. Cyndi has already jumped in to coordinate decorations for the author’s luncheon. In addition, prospective members Ann Schaefer, Jan Kurhenguhwa, and Jasna Penick joined us on March 20 to learn more about our branch.

Thank you to Brie Wells, AAUW member, for presenting an outstanding program and showing us what it means to be a real champion.

Emily Williams, VP Programs, was recognized by the branch for her many contributions to the community and was awarded a KIVA gift certificate to be used to further social justice and ensure human rights for all women. Congratulations Emily! The AAUW Manhattan Beach KIVA Club has grown to $3,750.00 since March 2009 from an original investment of $175.00. Check out KIVA at http://www.kiva.org/

It was good to welcome Judy Haueter, Trudy Leete, Judy Scatoloni, and Barbara Gayle.

The next meeting (see flyer) scheduled for April 17 at the Lakes with our sister Torrance branch is bound to be thought provoking. Legal advocacy attorney, Elizabeth Kristen, will address the impact of Title IX against discrimination in sports especially for women and girls. Please join us and meet Elizabeth and her client, a local high school student athlete.

This is a critical time in our country with so many issues in the forefront for women and girls from health care reform to funding for public education to protecting our environment to promoting a stable economy and more. You can make a difference. Equal Pay Day takes place this year on Tuesday, April 20. AAUW members and supporters across the country mark this symbolic day when women’s wages catch up to men’s wages from the year before. In 2009, the AAUW public policy staff won such victories as the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Join us to learn more and inform and educate others.

2010 is here whether we are ready or not and that is a good thing as 2009 was a challenging time for many in this country. We all look forward to an improved economy and better times. Many of you out there take this time to consider resolutions for the year ahead. Please include your AAUW branch in your planning. So many worthwhile events and projects are available to members through the local, regional, and national organization. Our primary mission remains to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

“Girls in Gear” Career Forum happens on January 19, at the Civic Library in Torrance at 7 PM (See Flyer). We need your help and attendance. Encourage any middle and high school girl that you know to attend. Copy the flyer and deliver to your neighborhood school. This is a joint effort with the AAUW Torrance branch. Our January board meeting will be immediately before the program, 5 PM, at Acapulco Restaurant in Torrance at 3530 West Carson Street, Torrance (310 542-2270) near the Del Amo Mall. Please RSVP to Anne so she can get a count for dinner. All are welcome.

We are fortunate to feature Karen Taylor, Executive Director and co-founder of “WriteGirl” at our February branch meeting on Saturday, February 6, 9:30 AM, at the Torrance/Zamperini Field Airport Conference Room. Please note the change of date. This excellent AAUW program for teen girls matches mentors with mentees to develop creative writing skills for life. WriteGirl publications have collectively won over 20 national book awards!

Becky and Huck Tan hosted a wonderful holiday party! Thank you for graciously opening up your home to all of us. The food and fellowship was awesome!

We're into the Holiday Season now and before we know it, 2009 will be history. We've had a good start in our program year and anticipate building even more in 2010. Based on the discussion on November 14th in the board meeting and the wonderful presentation by Emily Williams, there are many things that this branch has in the works.

The Local Scholarship for an El Camino College student is expected to be funded at $500 for 2010-2011. Becky Tan has been actively involved in setting up a table at the West High School Swap Meet in Torrance, raising $124 initially and expecting to do a similar take on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Additionally a collection at the November meeting in memory of Bernice McMahon raised $211, putting us definitely within our goal for this year of $500. Further discussion of a more permanent fund-raising program for this purpose will be studied.

A possible change in the Branch name was discussed so that it reflects the broader area from which our members come. A quick count in the new Yearbook and Directory sows that about 20 of the 54 members live in Manhattan Beach. The rest are from several other areas.

Tech Trek continues to be a major focus of Branch efforts. There are many small, on-time tasks that can be done by our members on this program so that the work isn't on the shoulders of one or two people. We've reserved six places in the camp in San Diego for next summer. The coordinators will be asking for help in the coming months.

The Authors Luncheon on May 15 will feature "A Touch of Humor". Elaine has lined up our authors, but here again there are several small, one-time tasks where members can help out. Specifically we need someone who will handle the Silent Auction.

We're open to helping you find a way to pitch in and participate in the projects ahead.

Where does our Money Go?

Our AAUW Branch is very proud of our philanthropic efforts. The largest fundraiser of the year is, of course, the Authors' Luncheon. Most of this money goes to sending girls to the summer science camps. In addition to the camp, $1000 went to the Education Foundation and the Legal Advocacy funds set up nationally. Those assessments have just been sent off with a total of $595 going to EF California sponsoring a graduate fellow, and $550 dedicated to the LAF "case support fund". This year the Tech Trek funding will send 6 campers to San Diego State University to the tune of $4800. Our last philanthropic effort goes to our local El Camino Scholarship, a $500 award given to a woman getting her AA degree who is going on to a 4 year institution. This scholarship was started as a Memorial Scholarship. At our November meeting the attending members generously collected $211 toward this scholarship honoring Bernice McMahon, our founding president who passed away this past month.

The mission of AAUW/MB continued as a group of Branch members read and scored essays submitted by local middle school girls who want to attend Tech Trek. Interviews were also held at seven middle schools. Those of us who read essays and held interviews were impressed with the strong desires and strengths exhibited by the candidates. Deciding who will attend is always difficult.
Our March meeting was held at Firehouse #5 near LAX. Emily Williams presented very interesting insights into Fire Departments in general and this one in particular. This was a special bonus. The regular program was an inspiring account of the world of Microfinance which has helped many people but especially women in very poor areas of the world get loans to start small businesses and bring themselves out of poverty. Go to www.grameen-info.org to find out more, especially if you missed this wonderful program. Another organi- zation, Kiva, is worth looking into as well and provides a way for you to get involved. A nominating committee has been hard at work searching for candidates to fill the slate of officers for next year. We think they will be successful. We have so many members who would be outstanding officers and would make decisions that would carry our Branch higher and higher! The slate will be announced at our next meeting with voting by email in May and installation in June.
We want to thank Barbara Torday, one of our newest members, for hosting First Friday this month. Getting together socially and networking is always pleasurable. Husbands and significant others enjoyed it, too.

Spring has arrived! The air is filled with the sweet smell of blossoms, new growth, and renewal. We hope that this will be the season for recovery, revival, and retrieval. We look forward to our expectations and dreams being restored and a rebirth of peace and prosperity.
